SWITZERLAND DAY 5: EXPLORING INTERLAKEN AND BEYOND

My fifth day in Switzerland was a delightful blend of serene landscapes, quaint towns, and pristine alpine lakes. Beginning in the charming town of Spiez and venturing into the heart of the Bernese Oberland, the day unfolded like a dream, filled with picturesque views and unforgettable moments.

A MORNING IN SPIEZ

The day began in the idyllic lakeside town of Spiez, nestled on the shores of Lake Thun. Known for its tranquil charm, Spiez boasts historical landmarks and breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It was the perfect start to my journey.

I spent the morning exploring Spiez Castle, a medieval fortress majestically perched atop a hill overlooking the lake. Strolling through the castle grounds felt like stepping back in time, with its immaculately preserved architecture and lush gardens. From the castle, the panoramic views of Lake Thun and the distant Alps were simply mesmerising.

THE CRYSTAL WATERS OF OESCHINENSEE

Next, I made my way to Oeschinensee, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful alpine lakes, located above the village of Kandersteg.

The walk to the gondola station was itself an experience, with scenic views along the way that made me stop and capture countless photos.

The gondola ride to the top was a treat, offering sweeping vistas of the surrounding peaks and verdant valleys.

The lake itself is not directly at the top of the gondola. Once at the top, a 30 min walk brought me to Oeschinensee. To access the lake, head out on the dirt road toward the mountains, following signs to Oeschinensee.

The trail to Oeschinensee was filled with endless stretch of greenery with snow-capped mountains.

Along the way you will pass by peaceful cows grazing in lush green meadows with the majestic alpine scenery in the background.

Sound on to listen to the melody by the cow bells as the cows graze and move. I love how it evokes the tranquil and picturesque atmosphere of the Swiss countryside.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on my side. Grey skies and intermittent rain muted the lake’s famed turquoise waters, giving them a more subdued greyish tone. Despite this, I took a leisurely walk along the shore, enjoying the crisp mountain air and the tranquil ambiance. As the rain grew heavier, I decided against hiking the nearby trails. Though the lake didn’t quite shine in its usual glory, its dramatic backdrop of snow-capped peaks and towering cliffs still made the visit worthwhile.

I couldn't resist snapping photos of the flowers I see along the way back to Kandersteg. Here's a beautiful patch of wild pink flowers.

A TRANQUIL AFTERNOON AT BLAUSEE NATURPARK

In the afternoon, I visited Blausee Naturpark, a small yet enchanting lake tucked away within a quiet forest. The name "Blausee," which translates to "Blue Lake," perfectly describes the crystal-clear waters that shimmer in various shades of blue. Legend has it that the lake’s stunning color comes from the tears of a maiden mourning the loss of her beloved – a story that adds an air of mystique to this already captivating location.

The waters of Blausee is so transparent that I could see the rocks and trouts below the surface. I couldn’t help but pause at every corner to admire the serenity of the place.

It did not take a very long time for me to finish touring the area. Blausee may be small in size, but its beauty left a lasting impression on me.

CAFÉ DE PARIS

After a day filled with exploring Switzerland’s picturesque landscapes, I ended my evening with a delightful dinner at Café de Paris in Interlaken. The café exudes a cozy yet elegant atmosphere that perfectly complements its French-inspired menu.

For my meal, I started with a comforting bowl of tomato soup, which was perfect for the rainy weather. For my main course, I chose the Swiss classic rösti. The crispy, golden-brown potato dish was perfectly prepared – crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside.

If you’re ever in Interlaken, I highly recommend stopping by for a meal

FINAL THOUGHTS

This day was a perfect blend of cultural exploration and natural wonders, from the historical richness of Spiez Castle to the natural wonders of Oeschinensee and Blausee. Each stop offered a unique charm, leaving me in awe of the country’s diverse landscapes.
