EXPLORING LUCERNE AND BEYOND
Waking up to a rainbow stretching across Zurich's sky was the perfect start to my second day in Switzerland. It felt like a sign that the day ahead would be filled with magic – and it truly was. From the majestic peaks of Mount Rigi to the charming streets of Lucerne, every moment was a blend of natural beauty and historical wonder.

From Zurich, I took a train to Lucerne.
CHAPEL BRIDGE AND RIVER REUSS
No visit to Lucerne would be complete without a stroll across the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke). This iconic wooden bridge, adorned with vibrant flower boxes, spans the River Reuss and is one of Switzerland’s most photographed landmarks.

The Chapel Bridge is adorned with vibrant flowers.
As I walked along, I admired the historic paintings that line the bridge’s interior, each depicting moments from the city’s rich past. The gentle sound of the river below and the surrounding views of the cityscape were picture perfect. While waiting for the SGV ship to take me to Vitznau, I couldn’t resist capturing the picturesque scenery around me.

MOUNT RIGI: THE QUEEN OF MOUNTAINS
From Vitznau, I boarded the charming cogwheel train to the summit, Rigi Kulm station.

The Mount Rigi cogwheel train.
As the train climbed higher, the view transformed into a breathtaking panorama of Swiss Alps, shimmering lakes, and quaint villages nestled below. Standing at the peak, I was in awe of Switzerland’s serene beauty, but one thing caught me off guard – the flies! Summer days brought an unexpected swarm, and I tried my best to keep my mouth closed at all times while marvelling at the scenery.

There were loads of flies. Don't they look kind of like helicopters in the photo?
From Rigi Kulm, I hiked to Kaltbad station, soaking in the postcard-perfect views along the way. The hike was easy and offered countless photo opportunities.

From Kaltbad, I descended via cable car to Weggis before catching the ship back to Lucerne. Each leg of the journey revealed new perspectives of Switzerland’s stunning landscapes.

LUCERNE’S OLD TOWN (ALTSTADT)
Back in Lucerne, I wandered through its Altstadt, the city’s charming old town. The cobblestone streets, colourful medieval buildings, and bustling squares felt like a step back in time. Every corner told a story, and the ornate facades and quaint shops added to the enchanting atmosphere.

I love the intricate wrought-iron sign.
I had hoped to have lunch at the famous Old Swiss House, but unfortunately, reservations were required, and there was no room for walk-ins. The waitress seemed a bit dismissive, which was disappointing, but it didn’t take away from the joy of exploring Lucerne’s vibrant streets.

The iconic Old Swiss House.
LION MONUMENT
Next on my list was the iconic Lion Monument. Carved into a sandstone rock face, the sculpture of the dying lion is a somber yet stunning tribute to the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution.

The Lion of Lucerne.
The sheer size of the monument surprised me, and its emotional depth left a lasting impression. It’s a place of quiet reflection and a must-visit for anyone exploring Lucerne.
HOFKIRCHE ST. LEODEGAR
I made my way to the Hofkirche St. Leodegar, one of Lucerne’s most prominent churches. Its twin towers dominate the city’s skyline, offering a striking silhouette against the sky. Though I couldn’t explore the interior due to an ongoing service, the church’s beauty and serene surroundings were enough to make the visit worthwhile.

Hermitage Lake Lucerne - Beach Club & Lifestyle Hotel
After a day of exploring, returning to the Hermitage Lake Lucerne Hotel was pure bliss. Nestled on the shores of Lake Lucerne, the hotel seamlessly combines luxury with tranquillity. The staff were incredibly attentive, even offering to help me make a reservation when I mentioned my disappointment with lunch at the Old Swiss House.

A plate of risotto served with fresh salmon and garden vegetables, accompanied by freshly baked bread, which I ordered via room service for dinner. Yummy!
The highlight, of course, was the incredible view of Lake Lucerne and the majestic mountains that framed the horizon – a sight I couldn’t get enough of during my stay. The hotel’s modern design, complemented by large glass windows and open spaces, allowed me to fully embrace the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains.

A vibrant sunset over Lake Lucerne, captured from the hotel room.
The hotel offers direct access to the lake, complete with a private beach and lounge chairs. I spent a peaceful evening enjoying the gentle sound of the water lapping against the shore. Guests can also rent paddleboards or kayaks for a more active experience on the lake.
While the hotel feels like a secluded retreat, it is actually just a short drive or bus ride away from Lucerne’s vibrant city center. This makes it an ideal base for exploring the city’s famous landmarks, including the Chapel Bridge, Lion Monument, and Old Town, while still enjoying the serenity of a lakeside escape. It’s one of my favourite stays in Switzerland and I would highly recommend it!

FINALLY…
My second day in Switzerland was a journey through some of the country’s most iconic and beautiful locations. From the sweeping vistas of Mount Rigi to the historical charm of Lucerne’s Old Town, every experience felt like stepping into a postcard.
Switzerland’s charm lies not just in its natural beauty but in its seamless blend of history, culture, and tranquillity. As I fell asleep that night, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the memories I had made and excited for the adventures to come.
