Review of Phare Circus, Siem Reap, Cambodia

A MUST-SEE EXPERIENCE IN CAMBODIA

When I first heard about the Phare Circus in Siem Reap, Cambodia, I was thinking more of acrobatics and stunts in the sense of Circus du Soleil.

As it turns out, Phare Circus is so much more than a typical circus – it's a mesmerising blend of theater, storytelling, acrobatics, and Cambodian culture that left me in awe.

ABOUT PHARE CIRCUS

Phare, The Cambodian Circus, is not just about entertainment; it is also a social enterprise. Established by Phare Ponleu Selpak, an arts school in Battambang, Phare was created to provide underprivileged Cambodian youth with free art and performing arts education. Many of the performers seen on stage are graduates from this school, using their skills to uplift themselves. The circus serves as both a platform for artistic expression and a source of livelihood, with proceeds supporting both the performers and the school.

ABOUT THE SHOW

The performance at Phare Circus is a unique show that weaves together traditional Cambodian themes with modern storytelling. The show is rich in narrative depth, and speaks of myths, folktales and stories reflecting Cambodia’s recent history and social issues.

The show I attended was called “Sokha”. This performance tells a poignant story of a young girl named Sokha, who is haunted by memories of the Khmer Rouge. Blending her traumatic experiences with surreal visions, the performance explores themes of survival, healing, and resilience. The performance was filled with humour, and breathtaking stunts, and I was highly engaged throughout. The performers also engaged with the audience frequently, creating a lively, immersive environment.

The performers used minimal props, but their skills, expressions and energy filled the entire space with life.

During the performance, there was also live music, performed by skilled musicians, which was an integral part of the show. With traditional instruments and rhythmic beats, the music enhanced every emotion on stage, making the whole experience more immersive.

FINAL THOUGHTS…

Phare Circus is not just about witnessing acrobatics or entertainment; it's about immersing yourself in Cambodian culture and understanding the power of art as a form of resilience and healing. By attending the show, you’re not only enjoying a fantastic performance but also supporting a social enterprise that changes the lives of Cambodian youth through art.

If you are in the area, I would strongly recommend that you pay Phare Circus a visit.
